U.S. Agency for Global Media Taps The Design Channel for New Program Identity

TDC to develop logo for Voice of America’s Global Mandarin news service

Washington, DC, May 4, 2020—It was announced today by David Franek, president and chief creative officer of The Design Channel (TDC), that the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) has engaged the firm to create a logo for “Plus One,” a soon-to-be-launched service from USAGM’s Voice of America (VOA) news agency.

“Plus One” is a program of VOA’s Global Mandarin news service and will publish a wide range of culture and lifestyle content about America aimed at Chinese-speaking audiences aged 15 to 34 within China and around the world. Sample topics include explorations of college admissions at American universities, popular social media platforms, how the healthcare system works in the U.S., what young Americans spend their money on, pronunciations of American names, and more.

Franek said, “It’s an honor to work with Voice of America, a news source that is respected around the world and dedicated to transparency and truth in the face of propaganda disseminated by state-run media. We want to create a graphic identity that aligns with the attitudes and aesthetic sensibilities of Millennials and Gen Z. It’ll undoubtedly be a fun process, but we won’t settle for anything less than a logo that instantly captures attention and invites exploration of Plus One stories and content.”

The official logo will ultimately be featured on Plus One content published on properties that include YouTube, BiliBili (a popular youth video site in China), YouKu (a video streaming service also popular in China), Instagram, TikTok, and other online/social media channels.
